Common questions

I forgot my PIN. Can you reset it?

We are sorry, but no one can reset it, including us. Your PIN unlocks the encryption key to your data, and that key never leaves your device and is never shared with us. If you have an encrypted backup file and know its passphrase, you can reinstall the app and restore from it. Otherwise the data cannot be recovered. This is the tradeoff that keeps your pregnancy data truly private.

How do I back up my data?

Open the app, go to Settings, then "Export encrypted backup". Choose a passphrase you will remember and save the file somewhere safe, such as your own cloud drive or a computer. To restore, use "Import backup" and enter the same passphrase. We never see the file or the passphrase.

How do I move to a new phone?

On your old phone, export an encrypted backup. Install Birth Control on the new phone, set it up, then use "Import backup" and enter your passphrase. Everything comes back: your due date, week-by-week progress, symptoms, weight, kick counts, contraction timing, appointments, and notes.

What is the decoy PIN and how do I set it up?

The decoy PIN opens a separate, empty vault, so a forced unlock reveals nothing real. Set it under Settings, "Decoy PIN". Choose a PIN different from your real one. At the lock screen, your real PIN opens your data and the decoy PIN opens the empty vault.

Do appointment reminders reveal anything on the lock screen?

Not by default. Reminders are optional, scheduled locally on your device, and discreet out of the box: the notification says something like "You have something scheduled tomorrow." and never mentions pregnancy or appointment details. If you would rather see standard wording, such as "Appointment tomorrow: 20-week scan", switch it under Settings, Reminders.

Is my purchase a subscription?

No. Birth Control is a one-time purchase of $5.99. You own it, with free updates and no recurring charges. There is no account, no cloud, and the app works fully offline.

How do I permanently delete everything?

Open the app, go to Settings, and choose "Erase everything". This permanently deletes all data on the device and cannot be undone. Since we store nothing on our side, that is all it takes to remove your data completely.
